How Long Should A Hot Water System Last?

As with any machine, hot water systems have a lifespan. The life of your hot water system will depend on several factors including if it is electric, gas or solar and if it is tankless or not. An electric system with a tank should on average last between 10 and 15 years, in comparison to a gas system with a tank having slightly shorter life expectancy at around 8 to 12 years, whilst a solar hot water system can last 10 to 20 years.

How do I know if my hot water system needs replacing?

  • The number one sign your hot water system needs replacing is if your system is frequently breaking down. In instances such as this it may be time to start looking at a replacement instead of a repair.
  • Your hot water isn’t as hot as normal or the hot water runs out faster than normal.
  • There are leaks from the valves or pipes.
  • Your water has a brownish (rust) coloured tinge or you can see rust or sludge accumulating around the tank.
  • There are strange sounds coming from your hot water system.

What can I do to extend the life of my hot water system?

Check for cracks and leaks in your system regularly. However, the best way to extend the life of your hot water system is to have a licensed plumber inspect and perform regular maintenance. They can identify any issues and resolve them before they turn into a much bigger problem.

The quality of your water will also affect the lifespan of your hot water system. Hard water can cause corrosion to occur on your tank much more quickly than soft water.
